usefulness of something functionally equivalent to PPD, but perhaps
easier to use in the general case.

In addition, dynamic capability discovery is needed (e.g. for the
printer to tell you whether it currently has photo-grade ink or normal
ink currently installed, whether it has A3 paper loaded, whether it has
the optional binder unit turned on, etc.).

Finally, because there is so much competition and rapid advancement in
printer capabilities by the manufacturers, IMHO it's going to be
necessary to allow a 2-part driver architecture. One part that can be
pretty generic (even open source), which covers the bulk of the
device's capabilities (say, the "normal" or common features) , and one
which encapsulates the handling of the new technology and/or sensitive
intellectual property in the latest models. I.e. the leading edge
technology where all the fierce competition is happening.
